This table talk will focus on what LEAs/Charters are doing to foster a sense of inter-rater reliability on the NCEES at both the school and district level.

Questions for Consideration

What is your LEA/Charter doing differently to ensure all stakeholders (teachers, administrators, central office staff) have a common understanding of the Standards and Elements of the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System?

Does your LEA/Charter have a protocol for classroom walkthroughs that include classroom teachers? If so, how has your LEA/Charter benefited from this practice?

How have you developed a culture where teachers are comfortable with peers, administrators, and other district leaders conducting walkthroughs regularly?

Does your LEA/Charter have a protocol for cross-district classroom walkthroughs where administrators and/or teachers from other schools conduct walkthroughs with personnel from the school they are visiting? If so, how has your LEA/Charter benefited from this practice?

Resources for Consideration

Inter-Rater Reliability Standards 1-5 Training: The purpose of this training is to develop inter-rater reliability of standards 1-5 through the use of classroom observation with video and a full scenario, understand professional coaching techniques, and analyze observation notes to plan for crucial conversations with teachers to support their professional growth.

NCDPI Inter-Rater Reliability Training 3: This training focuses on identifying effective 21st century practices in a videotaped lesson, locating and recording evidence on the NCEES online tool, and building consensus among colleagues.

Inter-Rater Reliability (Meet Rose Carter): This collaborative session provides an opportunity for participants to take a deep dive into Standard IV of the NC Professional Teaching Standards as they assume the role of an administrator at Sunny Skies Middle School, learn about and observe a teacher, look for evidences, check for inter-rater reliability, and create coaching questions to support Rose Carter's professional growth.
